Kanye West appears to be continuing his presidential bid for the upcoming 2020 election, despite the concerns surrounding his mental health, his erratic behavior, and his various Twitter rants airing his family’s dirty laundry. In a new interview, Tesla CEO Elon Musk says that he did his best to try to convince West to postpone his presidential run.
Speaking with the New York Times, Musk said that he has known West for at least ten years, and he revealed that he texts the Jesus Is King rapper “fairly often.”

“I’ve done my best to convince him that 2024 would be better than 2020,” explained the 49-year-old billionaire.
West’s recent Twitter rants have included hints that the father of four is considering waiting four years to pursue his political goals, but on late Saturday afternoon it seemed that he still has his hat in the 2020 race.

The Grammy award winner announced his presidential run via a 4th of July tweet, and despite the skepticism he moved forward with his first rally in South Carolina last weekend. His behavior during and after the rally, though, has worried family, friends, and fans.
West’s wife, Kim Kardashian, issued a rare statement this week concerning her husband’s struggle with bipolar disorder, and she asked for “compassion” as the family deals with the situation.
“I understand Kanye is subject to criticism because he is a public figure and his actions at times can cause strong opinions and emotions,” Kardashian West said in a lengthy statement on Wednesday. “He is a brilliant but complicated person who on top of being an artist and a black man, who experienced the painful loss of his mother, and has to deal with the pressure and isolation that is heightened by his bi-polar disorder.”
Kardashian added that those who are close to West know his heart, and they understand that his words don’t always align with his intentions. Musk echoed the sentiment, saying that he reached out to West during a recent “tweet rampage” to see if he was okay.
“When he was about a third of the way through the tweet rampage, just to see if he was doing OK, I sent him a text saying, you know, just checking on you, a lot of people are worried, just wondering if you’re OK,” said Elon Musk.

Kanye West did call Musk back, and he says that the rapper “actually seemed fine.” They also FaceTimed when West was in Wyoming with a “bunch of friends,” and he again “seemed fine on the call.”
“But it sounds like things are, you know, not fine. There seem to be a lot of issues,” said Musk.

The SpaceX CEO first tweeted his support when Kanye West announced his presidential bid, but he later tweeted – then deleted – that they might “have more differences of opinion” than he anticipated.
