Early Life & Education

Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the youngest child of former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif (father) and Kulsoom Nawaz (mother), was born in Lahore, Pakistan, on October 28, 1973.

Hailing from a Punjabi family with Kashmiri roots, Maryam shares her upbringing with three siblings: Asma Nawaz SharifHassan Nawaz, and Hussain Nawaz. Growing up, she was accompanied by her aunts, Saeeda Amir and Khadija Hafeez.

Maryam Nawaz Sharif‘s pursuit of education led her to the University of Punjab, where she earned a master’s degree in literature. By 2012, Maryam was actively engaged in the pursuit of her Ph.D.

Career

In 2012, Maryam Nawaz Sharif entered the political arena, showcasing her strategic prowess by spearheading her father’s election campaign, resulting in his triumphant ascent to the Prime Ministership. Recognizing her invaluable contributions to the Pakistan Muslim League (N) party, she earned the prestigious role of Chairperson for the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme.

However, Maryam‘s political journey extended beyond these accomplishments; she emerged as a fearless critic, using her voice to passionately challenge the Pakistani military establishment and Imran Khan‘s government.

In October 2014, the PTI filed a case in the Lahore High Court, alleging Maryam Nawaz Sharif‘s misappropriation of government funds for personal gain. On November 12, 2014, the court ordered her removal from the post, leading Maryam to step down as Chairperson the following day. Recognition for her achievements came in March 2017 when she was named one of the BBC’s 100 Women. Later that year, The New York Times included her in the list of the 11 most powerful women around the world.

Her political activism gained momentum in 2017 after her father’s disqualification and conviction by the Supreme Court of Pakistan in the Panama Papers case and money laundering through his UAE employment. During the NA-120 by-elections, she actively campaigned for her mother, Kulsoom Nawaz.

Despite receiving a PML-N ticket for the 2018 general election from NA-127 (Lahore-V) and PP-173 in June 2018, legal troubles ensued in July. The National Accountability Bureau filed a corruption case, resulting in a 7-year jail sentence, and Maryam Nawaz Sharif was disqualified from participating in politics for 10 years. PML-N nominated Ali Pervaiz Malik and Malik Irfan Shafi Khokhar as replacements for constituencies NA-127 and PP-173, respectively, in the 2018 elections.

On January 3, 2023, Maryam Nawaz Sharif was sworn in as the Vice President of the Pakistan Muslim League. This significant move, endorsed by PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif, expanded her role within the party as she took on the position of “Chief Organizer,” entrusted with the crucial responsibility of revamping and reestablishing the party’s structure across various levels.
