Pigeon Club's "Liar" Is Indie Rock Magic

May 2024 · 2 minute read

Pigeon Club is the musical project of Los Angeles based artist, musician and songwriter extraordinaire Wayne Whittaker. His new single “Liar” is his strongest music to date and is in collaboration with Grammy winning co-producers John Would and Amy Wood (Fiona Apple, Warren Zevon).

“Liar” is a plaintive and autobiographical song detailing Whittaker’s own blocks to true intimacy. He confides, “This was a really hard song to write, structurally, it came together very quickly. But once I read it back, it became clear that this was going to be a particularly exposing three minutes. Thankfully, the touched upon themes are unmistakably human, so at the very least I’ve confirmed that I am indeed only human. Lyrically, parts of the song read like a relational autopsy report.” The track details the defence mechanisms one uses that ultimately hinder connection. The song’s candid and intense lyrics are packaged in a lush sonic embrace. Honeyed vocals overlay jangly tones and atmospheric guitars entice with every note. Elements of folk, rock and indie pop all work together to create a memorable musical moment. The song is also released with a music video that features Wayne

Whittaker as a traveling entertainer. Using a puppet friend and card tricks, as well as other magic, he tries to wow and entertain the crowd to no avail. But he is determined and in the end the hard work takes a toll on the entertainer with him being frustrated and despondent. The music video mirrors the theme of the single, showcasing doubt, anxiety and self-effacing humor.

“Liar” is off of Pigeon Club’s upcoming sophomore album Another Year In The Minors which is slated for release this Spring.
